Fortinet stopped OS X Support 2015/12/16 11:22:48 (permalink)
0
Tried the private build and the published build for 10.11.1 and 10.11.2
Nothing works.

This IS a Fortinet problem other VPN Clients like Tunnelblick work without any problems.
To excuse the non existing effort on their side by waiting for Apple to solve THEIR client problems is ridiculous.

It's a shame that Fortinet leaves it's clients unsupported since months after they have paid for their solution.
Fortinet hampers our work and is a massive risk now for ongoing projects.

I will support any initiative in our company to get rid of this firewall.
In other fields we successfully use open source solutions - which do not leave you at the mercy of a commercial provider.
I hope we find some open source solution for a firewall as well.

Any proposals - or experiences?

It may be a good idea to open a tick with Fortinet Support.

FN says the release date of the client that "fixes Apple's problem" is January 25th. Way to take the initiative on a 6-month-old bug, guys!

So does anyone know the current status of this problem and if a new release that addresses it has indeed shipped? We just started seeing FortiClient kernel panic crashes on El Capitan, regardless of release used.

Also of note is we started seeing Windows BSD on FortiClient 5.4 and had to revert back to 5.2.5.

I'm feeling very uncomfortable because I took a chance on Fortinet FortiGate at a new job based on really positive feedback from many places, but in my entire career working with many Firewall/VPN platforms including Cisco, Juniper, and Palo Alto I've NEVER seen a VPN client crash an OS. It's unthinkable really.

FortiClient does more than just VPN. But if you install the VPN only part of it, it may have less chance to crash the OS.

Here is another interim build b499.
https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/58793690/mac/FortiClient_5.4.0.499_macosx.dmg

5.4.1 release may be available at the end of February.

P.S. b493 from previous post is different from the official 5.4.0 b493. Developer made the change after 5.4.0 was released.

We only install VPN, explicitly leaving out the endpoint protection components because we are not using them. I do get that having endpoint protection built in complicates the client and touches the kernel  where these sorts of issues can arise, but whether I am using FortiClient in VPN only mode or full endpoint protection mode it should not crash the OS, period.

Really, this makes an argument for having two versions of the client where those customers not using endpoint protection are not impacted by the hooks the client has in the OS to perform those functions and maybe those customers would be spared this mess.

Thanks, we'll test with this! We can easily reproduce the problem on El Cap, so we'll cross our fingers.

Build 499 does not work for us. Same problem with kernel panics.

This is very strange as I run El Capitan with the latest updates and I'm running 5.4 build 499 that was offered up here and don't experience any Kernel Panics. I have issues with Cisco AnyConnect causing problems but thats it. Very odd and can be very frustrating.

@brucereed, please post more information about your kernel panic if you have.

@Sartuche24, do you mean FortiClient is conflicting with Cisco AnyConnect? If without AnyConnect it works OK?

Just saying that FortiClient has been more stable on my MAC than Cisco AnyConnect. FortiClient works but I'm experiencing an issue with FortiClient and multiple DNS Suffixes not working. I do have a ticket open on that issue.

Did you see any issues with FortiClient and El Capitan prior to the 499 build?

We don't know for certain it is FortiClient, however, the crashes occur with FortiClient loaded and then goes away when it is removed. The FortiClient kext is the last to be loaded. Certainly it could be something else, but as I said, our El Capitan users never saw this prior to installing and using FortiClient. Crashdump is below.

I installed 5.4 499 on January 25th. Prior to that I was running 5.2.5 and didn't have any issues and I ran it for a couple months after it came out. Now I was having crashes with 5.2.5 at first but I more less did an upgrade and that didn't work out but I fully removed FortiClient then reinstalled it from scratch and it was solid since. I was having some other issues with SSL VPN but what I was experiencing wasn't fixed with 499 as it has to do with DNS Suffixesand its broke in 5.2.5 and 499. I may go back to 5.2.5 just because it was stable and I'm afraid of the problems everyone is experiencing. I can't tell you the last time I experienced a crash other than I know it was before November 6th when I installed 5.2.5.

I'm running MacOS 10.11.2 and FortiClient 5.4.0.493 (public build) on a Macbook Air.  I've never had a crash.  I have AirWatch on the system but no other AV.  Maybe folks with the crashing have a conflicting security app?

Anyway, I can connect just fine (I'm also using a FAC for 2FA with Fortitoken (boy was that fun to setup!), but the one MAJOR problem that is keeping me from deploying this is the inability to set a search domain for the FC IPSec connections.  Using the native PPTP or L2TP MacOS client, I can set a search domain of company.local and then I can ping hosts via FQDN and hostname only.  Requiring users to use FQDNs only is a non-starter and would break apps that don't give you that option like SharePoint URLs from workflows.

I've crawled the XML config and this does not appear to be an option.  You really need to expose more of the config options such as full crypto options in the UI.  Too much of it is in the config only.  Maybe EMS gives you more granular control?  I'm fully licensed for FC and it registers with my FG when I connect.

@Chris.Lin_FTNT, I appreciate you monitoring this thread.  I gave it to my FN Rep the other day regarding the code quality that is coming out.  We really need you all to step up your game for things as critical as this.  We also expect a company like FN to be more nimble than someone like Apple and come up with a solution before waiting for them to put out a fix (which ironically they appear to do more often at this point).  So do you know how I can assign a search domain to the FC IPSec connection?  Here's the ironic part, it works as it should using a SSLVPN full tunnel and FC.  I can't figure out what the difference is or what I have done that might cause it not to work.  Please advise.
